With printer production increasing, LexMark realized the manual approach of trash removal was no longer a viable solution.
The challenge was to automate trash removal, utilizing cube space versus occupying floor space that could be better employed for production and assembly of finished goods.
LexMark teamed with Advanced Handling Systems to design and integrate an automated trash handling system.
The two companies worked together, determining that working second shifts and weekends would minimize impacts to Lexmark's daily production.
The system was installed 20 feet in the air utilizing a heavy-duty support structure which incorporated a maintenance cat walk, along with fabricated chutes feeding the corrugated baler.
Through on-site weekly meetings and written status reports, AHS managed the coordination of multiple trades to bring the project in on-time and within budget.
Result: Within the first hour of production, the system began paying for itself by reducing the number of associates dealing with trash removal from the previous average of eight personnel to only one.
The new system allows LexMark to focus on increasing production taking advantage of the efficiencies gained.
